From Espresso Martinis to Black Russians, Six Simple and Sophisticated Coffee Cocktails!

Espresso Martinis may well be the drink of the moment, and with its perfect blend of rich coffee flavour and alcoholic kick, it’s easy to see why. But why limit your coffee cocktail options there? With coffee being one of the most popular drinks in the world, with a versatile profile that compliments a whole range of flavour combinations, there are a whole range of cocktails you can make easily at home, to make your morning pick me up into the perfect evening treat.

So, to celebrate the launch of O’Donnell Moonshine Coffee, and the world’s third most popular beverage, not to mention the wonderful libations you can create when the two come together, we’ve created a list of six simple and delicious coffee cocktails that you can make in just minutes at home!

1. The Espresso Martini

Well, we’ve mentioned it already, and let’s be honest, in most arguments over the best coffee based cocktails, this one usually comes out as the winner. Rich, smooth and full of intense flavour this cocktail menu staple has taken the world by storm in recent years.

While this one looks picture perfect passed over a bar, it’s also a surprisingly easy cocktail to recreate at home! Here’s our recipe for the perfect Moonshine Espresso Martini!

Ingredients

Preparation

Add ice cubes, vodka, coffee and espresso to a cocktail shaker and shake until the outside of the shaker is cool to the touch. Strain into a coupette. Finally, garnish your martini with coffee beans and enjoy!

2. White Russian

It is a truth universally acknowledged that coffee will always work with cream. This classic 3 ingredient cocktail had somewhat fallen into obscurity before being catapulted back into the limelight as the drink of choice of ‘The Dude’ in the Cohen Brother’s 90s classic The Big Lebowski.

A simple mix of Vodka, Coffee Liqueur and heavy cream, this one is perfect for fans of an Espresso Martini or anyone looking for a smooth, indulgent tipple that packs a punch and carries a strong coffee kick!

Ingredients

Preparation

Fill a tumbler with ice. Add 60ml of O’Donnell Moonshine Coffee and 30ml of O’Donnell Vodka and stir the mixture gently to combine. Pour the heavy cream over the top and serve!

3. Black Russian

The dark and brooding older brother to the White Russian that, with just 2 ingredients is far from complicated. Originally developed in the 1940s at a hotel bar in Belgium, the Black Russian was created in honour of the then US ambassador to Luxembourg Perle Mesta. This simple and sophisticated concoction takes its name from the two ingredients used to create it; traditionally Russian, vodka and dark, almost black, coffee liqueur.

Ingredients

Preparation

Fill a measuring glass with ice. Add Vodka and Coffee and stir with a long handled spoon to chill the mixture (circa 30 seconds). Strain into a tumbler filled with ice and garnish with a maraschino cherry and/or an orange slice.

4. Coffee Old Fashioned

Dating all the way back to the early 1800s, the Old Fashioned dates back to the earliest days of cocktails. This simple blend of whiskey, bitters and simple syrup, didn’t originally include coffee, but it has become an increasingly popular addition due to its enhancing effect on the other flavours included.

Ingredients

Preparation

Add all of the ingredients to a glass with ice and stir until mixed. Fine strain into a glass over ice and garnish with orange zest twist before serving.

5. Moonshine Iced Coffee

Because even in the depths of winter, there’s nothing better than relaxing with a cool (and boozy) iced coffee! Easy to make at home, and offering a long drink alternative to classic coffee cocktails, such as the Espresso Martini, this one can pack as much of a coffee kick (or Moonshine punch) as you like! To add a touch of extra indulgence to this one, you can also add a splash of Tough Nut Cream!

Ingredients

Preparation

Fill a glass or jug with ice. Pour in the iced coffee. Then add the coffee liqueur and stir to mix. Pour in your chosen milk or cream (or for an added Moonshine kick, you can use Tough Nut Cream). Serve and enjoy!

6. Mudslide

This decadent dessert cocktail is essentially the ultimate boozy milkshake. Invented at a bar on Gran Cayman Island, when a guest asked for a White Russian and the barman wanted to include Irish Cream liqueur. The perfect blend of chocolate, vodka, coffee and cream, what’s not to like with this indulgent tipple?

*To create a ‘Ferrero Rocher’ Mudslide try swapping out some of the Vodka for our famous ‘Tough Nut’ Moonshine!
