In this guide, we’re diving into the Margarita’s origins, a few fun variations you can try, and showing you how to spice things up O'Donnell style, with a moonshine-powered twist you'll never look back from.

Where Was the Margarita Invented?

The origins of the Margarita remain somewhat unclear. There are several origin stories claiming credit for its invention in Mexico or the southern states of America during the 1930s and 1940s. One of the earliest stories credits its creation to barman Carlos "Danny" Herrera, who is said to have invented it, in 1938,  for guest and showgirl Marjorie King. She was allergic to most spirits, but not to tequila. According to this myth, the cocktail earned it's name Margarita as the Spanish translation of Marjorie.

Wherever it began, one thing’s for sure: and that is that the Margarita quickly took the world by storm, dazzling with its bright citrus flavour, clean finish, and endless versatility.

What’s in a Classic Margarita?

A traditional Margarita recipe keeps it simple:

  • 50ml Tequila

  • 25ml Fresh lime juice

  • 20ml Triple sec (or other orange liqueur)

  • Salt rim (on glassware)

  • Ice

  • Lime wedge to garnish

Shaken and served over ice (or with blended ice in the glass), the Margarita is a crowd-pleaser that perfectly balances tang, with sweet, and salty notes.

Popular Margarita Variations

One of the best things about Margaritas is how easily you can adapt this fairly simple recipe to create something completely new. Some of our favourite Margarita mix up suggestions include:

  • Frozen Margarita – A slushy-style drink with blended ice perfect for hot days.

  • Strawberry or Mango Margarita – Add fresh chopped, or blended fruit fora tropical flavour and juicy burst.

  • Spicy Margarita – For those who like bold flavour and for their citrus to kick.

And that brings us to the ultimate upgrade…

Say Hello to the Ultimate Spicy Margarita

It’s quick, it’s easy, and it packs a punch.

Ingredients:

 Recipe:

  1. Sprinkle the Tajin lime & chilli seasoning onto a small plate.
  2. Rub a wedge of lime around the rim of your glass, then dip into the Tajin to coat the edge with that spicy kick.
  3. Fill your cocktail jar shaker with ice, add a measure of Lime Moonshine and Vodka.
  4. Shake it up until the mix turns cloudy and ice-cold.
  5. Strain into your prepared glass over fresh ice, and garnish with a dehydrated lime slice.
  6. Sip, savour, and feel the heat!

Bold, balanced, and just the right amount of heat.

Why Use Moonshine Instead of Tequila?

Our new Lime Moonshine is a smooth, fruity spirit that delivers a bold and zesty flavour and a good old Moonshine kick. It’s less sharp than tequila, making it more approachable and the cooling notes of cucumber and fresh lime perfectly compliment the fire brought by the tajin — but it still packs plenty of the character you want in a Margarita.
