A Brief History of the Mojito

The humble Mojito has it's roots deep in 16th-century Cuba. A drink known as “El Draque”, named for English sea captain Sir Francis Drake, is widely believed to be the predecessor of the Mojito we know and love today. This cocktail combined aguardiente (an early form of rum) with sugar, lime, and mint; ingredients not only selected for their flavour, but also believed to have medicinal properties.

As rum production improved in the Caribbean, aguardiente was slowly phased out in favour of white rum, and the Mojito as we know it today was born.

The cocktail shot to fame, quickly becoming a local favourite and gained international popularity thanks in part to its association with Ernest Hemingway, who famously frequently indulged in a Mojito or two at Havana's La Bodeguita del Medio.

What Makes a Mojito?

A classic Mojito recipe consists of:

  • White rum

  • Fresh lime juice

  • Mint leaves

  • Sugar (traditionally cane sugar)

  • Soda water

The magic lies in creating the perfect balance. You want a citrusy tang from the lime, sweetness from the sugar, freshness from the mint, and a light fizz from the soda water, all brought together with a kick from a good rum.

To create the ultimate Moonshine Mojito however, we would recommend swapping out the rum for O'Donnell Moonshine Vodka and adding a generous measure of our new O'Donnell Moonshine Lime Liqueur!

Mojito Variations and Flavours to Try

One of the reasons the Mojito has remained so popular is its versatility. Here are a few delicious Mojito variations you could try:

  • Strawberry Mojito – Add fresh strawberries to your Mojito to add a sweet, fruity depth.

  • Coconut Mojito – Adding a splash of coconut milk or cream gives it tropical flavour and smooth, creamy texture.

  • Spicy Mojito – Add a dash of jalapeño brine and a few slices for a fiery kick.

  • Berry Mojito – Muddled raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries along with your mint for a fruity cocktail - you can also include a dash of Wild Berry Moonshine.

  • Pineapple Mojito – Perfect for summer, with tropical fruity notes.

And now, thanks to O'Donnell Moonshine, there’s a bold moonshine-infused twist you can try at home.
